Walking Tennis Rules

Walking Tennis Rules

There are two versions of the Walking Tennis Rules. Learn about the differences here.

Walking Tennis 1 (WT1)

Walking Tennis 1 (WT1) offers a great opportunity to get into or back into tennis. As WT1 is played on a smaller court and traditionally indoors the game can be played all year round and is not limited to tennis specific venues. The reduced physical demands required from WT1 also allows almost anyone regardless of their physical abilities the opportunity to participate.

Played On a Badminton Size Court

Walking Tennis 1 is predominately played on a badminton size court using a Mini Tennis net. But as WT1 is all about offering an easy entry into the sport it can also be played on a variety of size courts that best meet the needs of the participants or facility.

Two Bounces Permitted

Walking Tennis 1 allows the OPTION of a second bounce. However unlike Walking Tennis 2 the second bounce is permitted to bounce outside of the lines.

No Running or Jumping

When playing Walking Tennis BOTH feet are not allowed to leave the ground at the same time, so no running or jumping permitted.

Equipment

To play Walking Tennis 1 we recommend you use the following equipment; 21″ tennis rackets, mini tennis RED balls and mini tennis nets.

Scoring

When playing Walking Tennis 1 you can use a variety of scoring systems. We do encourage alignment with the scoring system used for Walking Tennis 2 (short sets with sudden death deuces). However , do be flexible if your situation needs you do be.

Walking Tennis 2 (WT2)

Walking Tennis 2 (WT2) offers a great opportunity to learn tennis skills, build physical fitness and meet new people. WT2 is played on a full-size tennis court but with a few simple changes to the rules enables the game of tennis to be much more accessible.

Court

There is no difference in terms of court dimensions and markings between the Walking Tennis and the traditional game. Therefore singles is played within the singles court and doubles is played within the doubles court.

Two Bounces Permitted

Walking Tennis 1 allows the OPTION of a second bounce. However, unlike Walking Tennis 1 the second bounce must land within the designated court markings for the format you are playing (so singles lines for singles and doubles lines for doubles). However, there is one exception to this and this is WHEN SERVING IN SINGLES when serving in singles the second bounce IS permitted to land in the tramlines (same as doubles).

No Running or Jumping

When playing Walking Tennis BOTH feet are not allowed to leave the ground at the same time, so no running or jumping permitted.

Equipment

Walking Tennis 2 is played using full-size rackets and ORANGE tennis balls.

Scoring

Walking Tennis 2 is played on using traditional scoring but to prevent matches lasting too long we do encourage the use of sudden death deuces.

These are the official Walking Tennis Rules provided by the Walking Tennis Association (WkTA)
