Stroud walking hockey festival attracts over 100 players

More than 100 walking hockey players gathered for a festival of sport and camaraderie in Stroud.

Twelve teams from Stroud, Bromsgrove, Bristol, South Berkshire, Wythall and Cheltenham took part in Stroud Hockey Club’s annual walking hockey festival on Sunday, August 2, held at the Astroturf pitch at Stratford Park Leisure Centre.

After four hours of competitive play, Stroud and South Berkshire were named joint winners.

Chris Gardner, a former player with Stroud Hockey Club, said: “As with many older players, the dynamism of field hockey matches has meant that my joints are less robust than they were.

“It’s fantastic to be able to play walking hockey, to feel part of a team and to enjoy the comradeship of fellow enthusiasts.

“The cafe at the leisure centre offers the chance to socialise afterwards.”

The walking hockey section of Stroud Hockey Club, known as SWHISH, was launched in 2023 by five former club members.

It now has more than 35 players, including both returning players and complete newcomers to the sport.

At least 22 people regularly attend the friendly Tuesday morning sessions, held from 10am to 11.15am at Stratford Park.

Each session costs £5 and includes coaching, skill drills, game play and plenty of fun.

Walking hockey allows people—particularly older men and women—to enjoy hockey at a gentler pace.

Coaching and sticks are provided for those new to the game.

The sport is designed to be accessible and safe.

Teams start at five players each, with no goalkeepers.

The ball used is slightly larger and lighter than a standard hockey ball and only pushing or slapping movements are allowed.

Trainers, not studded boots, are essential and players are encouraged to dress in layers and bring water.

Stroud Hockey Club has three men’s teams, three women’s teams, a mixed team, an indoor section and youth teams.

Founded in 1928, the club was one of the first in Britain to encourage both men and women to play.
