A new “walking tennis” project backed by the sport’s Scottish governing body and homecare provider Home Instead will launch at the Joppa club on 22 April for a period of 10 weeks on Wednesday afternoons (2-3.30).
Ideally suited to older players, the sessions will be free and participants can borrow racquets and balls.

Walking Tennis offers all the enjoyment of tennis at a gentler pace, making it safe, social, and inclusive. It’s ideal for older adults, beginners, or anyone returning from injury, as well as those with joint problems or balance concerns who want to stay active without strain.
The game follows simple, adapted rules: for example…
- You can volley the ball, or hit it after one or two bounces;
- To count, your shot must be capable of bouncing twice in the court of play on the opposite side of the net;
- Serves can be over or under arm; from the baseline or from the service box line;
- You can only walk; running and jumping are not allowed.
Before the start of a match players shake hands on the agreed adaptive rules. Otherwise scoring and the rules are the same as regular tennis.
