Kent’s first Walking Cricket League launches with real promise

Kent Cricket Foundation has launched Kent’s first formal Walking Cricket League. This new chapter is already rekindling memories, forging friendships and uncovering promising talent across the county.

Players turned out in strong numbers for taster sessions at Mersham Sports Club and Sandwich Town Cricket Club, with many returning to the game after years away from the pitch. Street End Cricket Club and Folkestone Cricket Club will host their own taster sessions in the coming weeks.

While Walking Cricket focuses on accessibility and inclusion, the standard of play has highlighted the depth of experience that exists within Kent’s local cricketing community. The league also lays the groundwork for a more formalised Kent Walking Cricket team, providing a clear pathway towards future inter-county friendlies.

The league’s impact extends well beyond friendly competition. Walking Cricket gives local clubs a valuable opportunity to welcome back older members and reconnect them with their clubs as active participants rather than spectators. Through this, clubs continue to build a more rounded and inclusive cricket offer that celebrates lifelong involvement in the game.

The social benefits have proven just as significant. For many participants, Walking Cricket offers far more than physical activity. One player at Mersham spoke about the joy of returning to the field, explaining that he “hadn’t played on the Mersham pitch for 40 years” and that it was “an absolute joy to be back out in the middle.” At Sandwich, another participant described being back on the pitch as “a much nicer meeting point than the pub,” underlining the positive health, social and wellbeing benefits of the league.

By helping players return to the field rather than remain on the side lines, we are expecting a healthy and competitive inaugural season ahead.
