A walking rugby festival has helped raise funds for a dementia charity.
Held at Kendal Rugby Club on Saturday, the Auld Greys’ Walking Rugby Festival brought together players from across the north of England and Scotland.
It has become a fixture in the calendar, with visiting teams from Annan, Dalkeith, Settle, North Ribblesdale, Fylde, and Trafford joining the Kendal Auld Greys.
Pete Halsall, organiser for the Auld Greys, said: “The festival was a great success, with fun and friendship the main areas of focus.
“The standard of rugby was really high, but the enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and friendship on view were what mattered most.
“To get 70-odd people from all over the place together and see them having such a great time chucking rugby balls about is a real treat.
“Raising money for such a worthy cause as Dignity in Dementia made it a really worthwhile day.”
Walking rugby is designed for older players, removing physical contact and emphasising enjoyment.
Most players at the festival were over the age of 55, with teams made up of both men and women, from seasoned players to complete newcomers.
In contrast to most tournaments, participants were mixed into seven-person teams drawn from across the clubs, playing for enjoyment rather than competition.
No scores were kept.
Following the games, players and supporters gathered in the clubhouse for a pie and chips supper, with some visitors making use of the club’s camping facilities.
The social aspect of the event was as important as the rugby itself, and many enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and making new ones.
This year, the festival also served as a fundraiser for Dignity in Dementia, a community interest company that supports families of people with dementia.
A raffle raised £580 on the day, bringing the Auld Greys’ total donations for the charity to more than £900.
The festival was described as a day filled with ‘laughter, encouragement, and light-hearted banter.’
The Kendal Auld Greys meet every Wednesday at 2pm at Kendal Rugby Club.
