Walking Basketball – Rules

Walking Basketball Rules Explained

Walking Basketball keeps the vast majority of standard basketball intact, with one defining adaptation that brings the pace down to walking speed. This guide covers the core principles shared by most Walking Basketball sessions.

The core principle: no running

Players must walk at all times — no running or jogging. Most clubs enforce this with a warning system, sometimes followed by a short sin-bin period (commonly one minute) for repeated infringements. As with most walking sports, coaches and referees use discretion between a purposeful fast walk and a deliberate run.

Team sizes and court

Walking Basketball is often played with fewer players per side than the standard five-a-side game — sometimes 3-a-side or even 2-a-side — and commonly on a half-court rather than a full court. This keeps every player closely involved and makes the walking pace easier to maintain across the whole game.

Scoring

Scoring generally follows standard basketball structure: baskets scored from within the two-point area count for two points, shots from beyond the three-point line count for three, and free throws count for one, following the same basic principles as the full-paced game.

Substitutions and general play

Substitutions are typically allowed freely throughout a session, helping players manage their own pace and rest as needed. Beyond the walking rule, general play — dribbling, passing, defending — follows familiar basketball structure.

Rules can vary by club

Because Walking Basketball has grown through many different clubs and community basketball associations independently, small variations in team size, court size, and enforcement of the walking rule exist from one session to the next. Always check with your specific club before your first game.
