The final ball has been bowled in the South East Kent WC League!
As we look back on our first season and we are bowled over by the support and success of the league. With some fierce competition in this emerging sport, Folkstone CC and Sandwich Town CC are tied for first place while Street End CC and Mersham CC tied for second.
Kent Cricket Foundation’s Walking Cricket programme begun as a tool to support those over 50 who may be socially isolated, experiencing loneliness and could benefit from improved physical wellbeing. The social hubs continue to be welcoming spaces for those looking for a slower version of the game and a good cup of tea. The launch of South East Kent WC League strongly mirrors the social hub’s values of community and inclusion, but with a more robust scoring and reporting system.
Cricket Clubs have a unique ability to support their local community. The league has been able to welcome back past members who thought their playing days were behind them as well as attract new interest from the community. It has proven to be a great addition to the Walking Cricket Programme, with participants reporting on improved skill, new friendships, and healthy competition.
We are looking forward to the 2027 season and are welcoming new clubs who may be interested. Please get in touch aimee.illidge@kentcricket.co.uk
