For anyone who likes the idea of playing netball but would rather leave the competition, contact and pressure on the sidelines, Noosa’s walking netball program could be the perfect fit.
Now in its seventh year, the weekly sessions are designed to get people active, social and laughing without the intensity associated with traditional competitive sport.
There is no scoreboard, no running and no jumping – and players are encouraged to forget about winning.
One of the program’s coordinators said the focus was on creating an inclusive and welcoming environment.
“We are into our seventh year of playing Walking Netball in Noosa. We try to make everyone feel welcome and ensure it’s inclusive for all,” the coordinator said.
“I actually prefer to call it modified social netball.”
The program has also removed one of the common barriers facing people wanting to try a new sport – having to find a team.
Players register individually and turn up at the Noosa Netball courts in McKinnon Drive, with participants mixed into casual groups each week.
That means newcomers do not have to worry about joining an established team or knowing anyone before they arrive.

The format retains the familiar elements of netball but with some important changes to keep things relaxed.
Players have four seconds to pass the ball and are allowed an additional step to help with balance. Running and jumping are prohibited, making the activity easier on the body while still providing a worthwhile workout.
Organisers say participants can be surprised by how quickly a brisk walk can raise their heart rate.
There is also no requirement for matching uniforms or specialised clothing – players can simply wear whatever they feel comfortable in.
The current season began on August 5 and runs until mid-November, but newcomers can join at any stage.
Games are held each Wednesday from 6pm, following a group warm-up.
The program is open to people who played netball years ago as well as complete beginners, and organisers say it can also suit people looking for a lower-impact activity following an injury.
The cost is $5 cash per game, with a $44 Netball Queensland insurance fee paid through the Netball Connect app.
With no emphasis on results, the biggest reward may be the social side, with players regularly finding themselves teamed up with people they had never met before.
One week’s playing partner can quickly become the person cheering from the sidelines the next.
