Football has always been a passion for Colin, but these days, his time on the pitch means something a little different.
Alongside his wife Jackie, who lives with dementia, Colin regularly attends Salford City FC Foundation’s Dementia Friendly Walking Sports sessions, where a shared love of sport is helping the couple stay connected to their community.
For Colin, the opportunity to enjoy a kickabout, meet new people and take part in activities he loves provides a welcome break from his responsibilities as Jackie’s carer.
But the benefits extend far beyond football.
As Jackie’s support needs have increased over the years, Colin has become a familiar face at the sessions, having initially accompanied his wife to ensure she could continue attending.
Now, the couple are both benefiting from an environment that recognises the importance of supporting not only those living with dementia, but also the people closest to them.

Delivered in partnership with Age UK Salford and Trafford, the Foundation’s programme combines accessible physical activity with opportunities for social interaction, helping older adults maintain their independence, confidence and wellbeing.
While Colin enjoys football, pool and puzzles, Jackie has embraced activities designed to support her coordination and balance.
For Ruby Williams, Health and Wellbeing Officer at Salford City FC Foundation, seeing the couple enjoy the sessions in their own ways demonstrates exactly what the programme is designed to achieve.
“The benefits from these sessions are not only seen in participants, but also their carers and loved ones. These sessions offer a flexible space where all participants can get involved in activities that match their personal strengths, interests and abilities.”
The flexibility of the programme means participants can engage at their own pace, whether that involves taking part in sporting activities, enjoying a conversation or simply spending time in the company of others.

And for Jackie and Colin, those opportunities have become an important part of their routine.
“It’s incredible to watch Jackie tackle hand-eye coordination and balance games. She’s always happy to give things a go, with a warm cup of coffee for her hard work afterwards!” Ruby added.
“It’s great to see how much Colin enjoys the sessions. He is never one to turn down a kick around with a ball, with the pitch giving him a space where he can focus on his own health, wellbeing and identity.”
Across the EFL, Club charities continue to use the power of football to reach people who may otherwise face barriers to participation, providing opportunities that extend well beyond the traditional 90 minutes.
At Salford City, that impact can be seen in the experiences of Jackie and Colin, whose weekly sessions offer much more than physical activity.
They provide a space where both can enjoy their interests, maintain friendships and feel supported, together.
