Walking Cricket has proved to be a huge success since it was first introduced in Somerset.

The aim of walking cricket is to have social time, activity, fun, and enjoyment, and it is aimed at people over 50—no playing experience necessary.

It’s more than cricket.

Walking cricket is making a lasting positive impact on the health, social, and emotional well-being of participants across the county and continues to cement Somerset cricket into the hearts of those participating whilst introducing the sport to a new audience.

Anyone interested in joining in should email mustafa.shaikh@somersetcricketfoundation.org or ring 01823 352266 or 07385818493.

These free Walking Cricket Sessions will be taking place at Ilminster CC ( TA19 OEY) between 10am and 12 noon, and Street CC (BA16 OEB) between 2 and 4pm on Thursday, 28th May.
All equipment will be provided, and as these will be outdoor sessions at the two cricket clubs, people need to come suitably attired.

Somerset has an ageing population with an increase in the 65 or over category, and health data shows a decline in exercise, with older demographics at higher risk of regularly experiencing loneliness and social isolation.

Loneliness, social interaction, and lower physical activity levels all correlate, and given cricket is a primary sport in Somerset, the delivery of walking cricket across the region could provide SCF, SCCC, and the local authorities with an opportunity to combat all three in a safe and welcoming environment.

Walking Cricket has three simple aims: fun, fitness, and friendship, so judging by the large number of people across the county who are now participating, it looks like it is going a long way towards achieving these.

There are several areas of Somerset, however, where a Walking Cricket Hub is yet to be established, and to this end, the Somerset Cricket Foundation is organising two ‘Come and Try’ free sessions.

The aim is to see how the sessions are received with a view to running some more at both venues over the summer months.

People can email Mustafa Shaikh with their name/email/phone contact details as below and he will get in touch with them.

SCF would like to thank both Street CC and Ilminster CC for their support in this initiative.
