Are you getting enough exercise?

Physical activity has been proven to improve brain health and boost longevity but according to data, many Australians aren’t getting enough.

According to Australian health guidelines, people aged 65 or older should aim for 30 minutes of physical activity or more each day. Those under 65 should aim for 150-300 minutes of moderate physical activity a week, or 75-150 minutes of vigorous activity.

However, according to data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 57 per cent of Australians aged 65 or older and 37 per cent of adults under 64 aren’t getting enough exercise.

Victoria University exercise physiologist Itamar Levinger said while many people struggle to maintain exercise habits over long periods, signing up for a sporting club or group activity that involves physical activity is a great way to stay motivated.

“If [they] want people to be involved in physical activity for a long period of time, people need to enjoy the activity that they do,” Professor Levinger said.

Here are five fun activities to help you stay in shape….

Pickleball

Dragon boat racing

Join a dance club

Join a walking group

Walking football

if you enjoyed a bit of soccer in your day but the joints are too sore to run around the field these days, walking football might be the game for you.

The modified version of the game offers a chance to make friends, get the body moving and enjoy some of soccer’s fundamental skills.

Some high-intensity elements of the game, like running, heading, and tackling, have been removed to make it accessible to players of all ages.

If football isn’t for you, you might want to try walking basketball.
