Grayshott Wanderers impress at cricket festival

Grayshott Wanderers, Grayshott’s newly-formed walking cricket team, impressed in their first festival appearance at St Cross Cricket Ground in Winchester.

The Wanderers won four out of their five fixtures and only just missed out on winning their fifth game.

A team of ten made the journey to Winchester for a well-organised event with everyone enjoying themselves and meeting new walking cricketers.

The other teams who took part were two Eastleigh sides, Fleet, Gosport Borough and the New Forest. The event was organised by the Hampshire Cricket Board.

Walking cricket is primarily aimed at participants aged 55 or older, but is open to male and female cricketers who might not be able to participate in mainstream cricket because of mobility or other issues.

Walking cricket is open to male and female participants and no experience is necessary to get started. The club will supply all the necessary equipment, including bats, stumps and incrediballs (soft cricket balls) – so no protective gear is required. All new adult members in their first year at the club enjoy free membership. The first session is also free, and it is then £3 per session thereafter. Sessions takes place every Thursday from 1pm to 2.30pm at the Broxhead Common Ground in Lindford, starting on Thursday, May 7.

A combined team of players from our Colchester and Chelmsford walking cricket hubs achieved a fantastic victory at Lords this week. The team competed against MCC, Middlesex and Surrey in a 16 over fast paced series. They played a total of 6 games throughout the day at the Lords indoor cricket centre. After losing their first two matches with a close margin, they fought back well to win the next 4 matches to win the competition overall.

The festival featured teams from Fleet, Eastleigh, Gosport, New Milton and Grayshott, with the latter hub being new to the game and being run by the club themselves. Players from across Hampshire enjoyed the opportunity to connect, compete and share their passion for the game.

The Somerset Cricket Foundation Walking Cricket League competition, sponsored by Rajpoot Indian Restaurant and Home Science International Food, was once again hosted at the Highbridge Hub at Highbridge YMCA. Five teams from across Somerset took part: defending champions Weston, alongside Highbridge and Yeovil, with two new hubs—Bridgwater and Wells—joining the competition for the first time. The league was played over five rounds, from mid-February to mid-March, and featured some excellent cricket throughout.

Eleven members of the Bovey Tracey Walking Cricket group, now in their second season, took part in the inaugural Devon Walking Cricket Festival in early July, hosted by Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club and Devon Cricket Foundation. In all, six teams took part and were divided into two groups- all games took place on roughly a half-sized ground. Although teams consisted of only eight players, squads could be larger to give more people a chance to participate, so three of the Bovey players joined a scratch combined team called Budleigh Tracey!
