An operation to have a stent fitted three years ago as a result of coronary heart disease meant plenty of exercise rehab for Brian during his recovery, which included a recommendation to join a walking rugby side run by the Worcester Warriors Foundation. Travelling 45 minutes to attend his first session one Friday, he was immediately hooked. “Most enjoyable, a friendly bunch of people, and definitely harder than it might sound. A really good workout.”
Along with the current surge of interest in touch rugby from those between 20 and 50, the popularity of walking rugby among older generations of men and women is enjoying a significant post-Covid boom.
The benefits in terms of exercise are obvious but what really comes across speaking to players and community managers running the teams is that walking rugby is about much more than that. The enjoyment of being social and part of a collective trumps whatever the result might be, with having tea, coffee and biscuits afterwards a staple of most clubs…
