A WELL-ESTABLISHED group that meets in Wolsingham Leisure Centre every Monday night is enjoying success.
The Walking Netball class, founded in 2021, has around 30 members of all ages, from older children to grandmothers and is an all-female group. The Weardale Gazette was invited along to see for ourselves what an amazing success it is.
We wrongly presumed that we would be walking around Wolsingham, throwing a ball at each other and, as it was a filthy night – cold and very wet – we weren’t looking forward to it! How wrong could we be! The friendly and welcoming ladies led us into the sports hall where for an hour, we trained – and WE even managed to put the ball through the net!
We were with ladies of all ages, from teenagers to pensioners, all playing at their own speed and abilities. Alfreda Lindley, who set up the group, spoke proudly of how it has grown and now competes in tournaments around the region. As a former netballer herself, she helps coach both defence and attack…
The Walking Netball group sprung up from the foundation of the Durham Dales Hockey team and indeed some of the netball players are still members of the hockey club. Founded by Sarah Martin-Denham, Alfreda joined the hockey group but as she played netball for Seaton Burn, she wanted one nearer to where she lived. Sarah helped with the funding so that Alfreda could found Walking Netball in Wolsingham.
There are now two groups within Walking Netball, cheekily named, Innit to Winnit, whose members play in tournaments and the Wiggle and Giggle group who do as the name suggests and are there not for competitive sport, more for the companionship and laughs. Both groups train and play together every Monday evening.
