Penrith Leisure Centre played host to the inaugural Northern England Better Club Games for over-60s.

Team Carlisle won the event after competing against several other regional teams.

Around 180 people aged 60 and over gathered at Penrith Leisure Centre at the end of October for the event, which has been informally dubbed the older persons’ Olympics.

Competitors travelled from Carlisle, Westmorland and Furness, Preston, Gateshead, Newcastle and York to take part in activities including pickleball, badminton, table tennis and walking netball.

Team Carlisle finished top of the leaderboard with 89 points, while Westmorland and Furness secured second place with 79 points and Team York finished third.

The Games were organised by GLL in partnership with several local authorities, including Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council.

Judith Menzies from Team Carlisle said: “The Better Club Games was a marvellous day from start to finish. It was fantastic to meet members from Better leisure centres across the North of England, and everyone was so friendly and welcoming.

“There was certainly a competitive edge to the day, matched by a strong sense of camaraderie as teams battled it out for the top spot.

“But for most of us it wasn’t about winning – it was about getting involved, having a go, enjoying ourselves and being part of something really special.”

Diana Holmes, representing Team Westmorland and Furness, added: “There was an incredible atmosphere with plenty of games, laughter and good conversation.

“We were really well looked after, and the healthy lunch kept us fuelled for all the activities.

“Congratulations to everyone who took part and a huge thank you to the fantastic organisers for putting together such a great event.”

Danielle Vipond Shields, better health and communities manager for Westmorland and Furness, said: “The inaugural Games provided an opportunity for participants to compete against people from outside their own area while showcasing the breadth of activities available to older adults through Better leisure centres across the North of England.

“With competitors already calling for a return next year and the winners keen to defend their title, the first Northern England Better Club Games could mark the beginning of a new annual fixture in the region’s active ageing calendar.”
