Success for first Senior Club Games at York Leisure Centre

A celebration of fitness and friendly rivalry among senior competitors in York has been hailed a success.

Nearly 30 people, aged 60 plus, gathered at York Leisure Centre for the city’s first-ever Senior Club Games.

Participants represented teams from Burnholme Sports Centre, Energise Leisure Centre and York Leisure Centre as they took part in a multi-sports challenge, featuring age-friendly activities such as pickleball, walking netball, timed swimming and cycling challenges.

Mark Harney scooped first prize for the timed swim; Dave Scoreby and Steve Calpin came first in the timed cycle trial; Mark Harney and David Vipas were crowned winners of the pickleball competition while the Green team (Lesley Beckwith, Debra Miles, Gill Clapham, Christine Ellis, Liz Buckles, Sarah Lockwood and Mick Strodder) took first place in the walking netball challenge.

he event coincided with the International Day of Older Persons with the theme for 2025 focused on building belonging and celebrating the power of social connections. It was the concluding event delivered by Better as part of the York Older People’s Assembly and Age UK York’s 50+ Festival…

The Senior Club Games builds on the success of the Senior Activities Programme, which launched in 2023. Better leisure centres in York run a host of weekly senior sessions to get more people active, learn new skills and connect with like-minded people, including Tuesday mornings at Energise Leisure Centre, Tuesday 11am – 1:30pm at York Leisure Centre, and 10am – 12pm at Burnholme Sports Centre.

Activities available for seniors include badminton, pickleball, exercise classes and aqua sessions.

Discounted membership is available for anyone aged 60 years and over and includes access to gym facilities and instructor-led exercise classes.
