A new walking rugby group is targeting men over the age of 60 to take up the sport

Bridgnorth Rugby Club will host the new venture, organised by Iain Seivewright and Liz Rochelle, with plans already in the pipeline to open up a session for women over the age of 60 as well.

The first session will take place on Monday, April 13, from 9.30am at the rugby club.

Bridgnorth Rugby Club Walking Rugby

Bridgnorth Rugby Club Walking Rugby - A brand-new Walking Rugby group is set to launch in Bridgnorth, offering men aged 60 and over the chance to stay active and socially connected while enjoying a slower-paced version of the game they love. To mark the launch, a special introductory event will take place on Monday, April 13 from 10am to 12pm at Bridgnorth Rugby Club. The morning will begin with a warm reception in the clubhouse, followed by a live demonstration of Walking Rugby to introduce the rules and format of the game. The event will conclude with refreshments and an opportunity to meet fellow participants in a relaxed and friendly setting…

Seivewright said: “We want to support men aged 60 and over who may be feeling isolated, inactive, or disconnected.

“Around 22 per cent of Bridgnorth’s population falls into this age group, and many face challenges with physical health, mental well-being, and social connection.

“Walking rugby is a slower-paced, low-contact version of the game and ideal for older adults. It gets people moving, builds confidence and creates a sense of belonging. The walking pace and dynamic movement will help the aged improve their range of motion and help maintain or enhance joint flexibility.”

Matt Cowdrey, inclusion & education coach for Worcester Warriors Foundation, has provided information on how to set up the group, having already set up walking rugby at seven clubs – with a grant secured to get the Bridgnorth club off the ground.

Seivewright added: “Our goal is to build something that lasts — with local volunteers, small contributions from members and support from community partners to keep it going long after the grant ends.

“We believe walking rugby can be a lifeline for men in Bridgnorth — helping them stay active and feel connected.”
