Age UK bringing walking tennis to Blackburn and Darwen

A local charity which supports the elderly is launching new tennis sessions to keep those in middle and old age active.

Age UK Blackburn with Darwen is starting walking tennis sessions for the 50s, with the first session due to take place in July.

As the name suggests, participants would be playing regular tennis with the only different rule being that any movement above a walk is outlawed.

Age UK, with funding from the LTA Tennis Foundation has launched its new initiative for older people, The Walking Tennis programme, which will take place in communities across England over the next two years. The Walking Tennis sessions will start being delivered at eight local Age UKs from Spring 2024. These local Age UKs, which include Age UK Shropshire Telford and Wrekin, Lincoln and South Lincolnshire, Devon, Sutton, Calderdale and Kirklees, Waltham Forest, Blackburn with Darwen and South Kent Coast, will implement and oversee the running and long-term viability of the Walking Tennis Programme.

The first two sessions are planned for the first week of July, with an open session at Darwen Tennis Club on Monday afternoons, and then women-only sessions due to be held at Corporation Park on Tuesday afternoons.

The first sessions are free, with the cost thereafter being £2.
