Craig Molloy sets up wellbeing walks from Battery Park

A former professional footballer from Greenock who helps more than 350 people across Inverclyde stay active every week has set up a new group for super striders.

Craig Molloy has introduced Friday wellbeing walks to get people out and about enjoying the Inverclyde air.

Trekkers meet at the skatepark at Battery Park every Friday at 10am for a walk followed by a catch-up at Cardwell Garden Centre.

Craig said the idea for the group – the first activity he’s introduced for people across Inverclyde that’s not football-related – came about thanks to his mum.

He said: “My mum and her friends were looking for something to do.

“I thought about starting an over-50s ladies walking football group but I wasn’t sure if people would be into it.

“I realised that the best way to get people involved would be just to get them out walking.

“We walk a few laps of the Battery and then head to Cardwell Garden Centre for a cup of tea and a chat, so there’s a real social aspect to it too.”

Craig said he was thrilled with the response to the first jaunt, which took place on February 20.

A group of determined individuals got well-wrapped up for the first journey and braved the rain.

He said: “We have 26 people in our group chat and we just want to spread the word.

“Everyone who came along on the day was buzzing about it.

“It’s something that we’re hoping to add to our schedule going forward.”

Craig said if the walking group is a success, he hopes to get a few volunteer co-ordinators involved.

As a professional footballer, Craig played for St Mirren, Stenhousemuir, Stirling Albion, and Brechin City.

As his career was winding down, he signed with Stenhousemuir on a part-time basis to allow him to pursue an HNC in Social Care at James Watt College.

Craig went on to work with young people in residential care for 15 years, and Craig Molloy Coaching CIC became a social enterprise in November 2024.
