Free walking tennis sessions planned for Grantham Tennis Club open day

A sports club will mark its 12th birthday with a family open day featuring free sessions and activities.

Grantham Tennis Club, on Gonerby Road, will hold its GTC 12th birthday and Tennis Club Open Day on Saturday, May 23.

The event will include free sessions throughout the day, with people invited to turn up and take part without booking.

FREE sessions include junior disability tennis coaching, adult coaching, walking tennis, netball, wheelchair tennis, adult disability tennis coaching and pickleball. Activities begin from 9am to 10am with free cardio tennis for ages 12 and over, alongside a mini tennis drop-in session for children aged three to nine.

A junior tennis drop-in session for ages 10 to 18 will run from 10am to midday, while the free GTC Edgley Games will take place from 10am to 3pm, with pre-registration through the gym.

Other attractions from 10am to 2pm include a tombola, raffle, face painting, pétanque, cake, ice cream and a barbecue.

There will also be tennis games, including beat the coach, fastest serve and tennis pong, as well as children’s games such as hook a duck, splat the rat and hoopla.

The birthday cake cutting is due to take place at about noon.

Further free sessions include junior disability tennis coaching, adult coaching, walking tennis, netball, wheelchair tennis, adult disability tennis coaching and pickleball.

Sittingbourne Tennis Club, with funding from Kent Tennis, will be hosting six free coached tennis sessions which are perfect for anyone who wants to give the sport a try, but at their own pace. Walking tennis requires no running or jumping, and you can let the ball bounce twice giving you more time to get to the ball. Age UK, with funding from the LTA Tennis Foundation has launched its new initiative for older people, The Walking Tennis programme, which will take place in communities across England over the next two years. The Walking Tennis sessions will start being delivered at eight local Age UKs from Spring 2024. These local Age UKs, which include Age UK Shropshire Telford and Wrekin, Lincoln and South Lincolnshire, Devon, Sutton, Calderdale and Kirklees, Waltham Forest, Blackburn with Darwen and South Kent Coast, will implement and oversee the running and long-term viability of the Walking Tennis Programme.
