Maidenhead RFC’s walking rugby team were among the first users of the club’s newly relayed £500,000 3G pitch this week.
Maids put down the new turf following the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign, when the first XV narrowly avoided relegation following a play-off decider with HAC (Honourable Artillery Company) at Braywick Park.
Work then began to pull up the old turf – which has been down for more than a decade – and replace it with a brand new 3G surface which was christened by the boots of the walking rugby group this week, The club’s Walking Rugby group was established back in 2023, around the time the Princess of Wales visited Braywick Park.
Since then, they’ve held regular training sessions and matches, and between 15-20 players regularly show up to display their rugby skills at a rather more sedate pace. With family members occasionally joining in, players as young as eight and at old as 70 have tried their hand at the sport.
Walking Rugby is like touch rugby, but players are meant to walk rather than run.
It’s a non-contact, slower-paced version of the game designed people of all ages to take part.
It’s also a great way to stay fit and healthy while enjoying the teamwork and community spirit that comes with being part of the Maids’ family.
The group meets for training sessions on Wednesday mornings from 11am-12pm, followed by refreshments and a chat in the clubhouse. They also stage a Christmas party and other social events through the year.
