Still Taking To The Court After 85 Years

At 85, Pat Gawn is still heading to the court each week, celebrating a recent birthday with her preferred, walking variant of netball.

The Balclutha grandmother-of-six marked the occasion with her teammates at the Cross Recreation Centre last week.

Gathering senior players from around the area, anyone interested in the low-impact game could join on Wednesdays, at 12.30pm.

“I love it and I love meeting the girls,’’ Mrs Gawn said.

‘‘We’re all such good mates.’’

Her sporting interests began at school, and included netball and competitive tennis.

She still played mainly in her preferred position, at centre.

Walking netball didn’t hold tournaments, or even keep score, she said.

‘‘It’s just about getting your heart pumping and having fun. And there’s always a good chat before and after.’’
