Attendees of the Warrington Wolves Foundation walking rugby sessions were thrilled last week, when a former Wire legend joined in their game.
John Fieldhouse, who debuted in a Wire jersey in 1977 at just 15-years-old, tried out the session for the first time last week, and really enjoyed his experience.
Walking rugby is a slower-paced version of the traditional game, tailored to people who may not be able to play the more intense sport due to age, injury or physical limitations.
At the game, Mr Fieldhouse was reunited with former teammate, John Peake, who is a regular attendee of the sessions.
Mr Peake was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, a progressive neurological disorder, which can impact balance and movement, a few years ago.
He has been using the walking rugby sessions to improve his balance, while also having the opportunity to stay active, build friendships and maintain those important personal connections.
The foundation has described the progress which John has made in the last three years as ‘remarkable’.
Ben Stiff, marketing and communications coordinator for the Warrington Wolves Foundation, said: “It was a lovely moment seeing two former Wire teammates reunited on the playing field, this time through the Foundation.
“Our walking rugby sessions are about much more than the sport itself.
“They’re an opportunity for people to stay active, enjoy themselves and connect with others, regardless of their age or ability.”
The sessions are held every Tuesday, between 10 and 11am, at Whitecross Community Centre.
