A leisure centre in Davyhulme has secured a 25 year lease to promote its services across south Manchester. BeActive in Trafford offers a range of services as well as a gym, fitness classes and a popular range of low impact classes for over 50s.
Crucially, the centre now maintains The Pulmonary and Cardiac rehabilitation programme, where clients with life limiting conditions are taken through a basic programme of exercise within the gym and introduced to a variety of sports tailored to lower levels of ability.
The increasingly popular over 50s range of classes include walking football, walking cricket and walking netball. Customers can pay a nominal fee to access classes – which take place everyday throughout the week and some evenings.
After a gruelling 60-minute cricket match Brendan, a retired teacher, said the classes had given him “a lifeline” and that although he travelled for over an hour the class was the highlight of his week.
Another attendee, Dean, had been told by his doctor to “get his affairs in order” after being discharged from hospital. He was referred to the centre for rehabilitation and said “the centre literally saved my life”.
His health has had such a marked improvement that he volunteers to help run several of the over 50s classes all at his own expense after leaving a successful music recording career due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)…
The centre provided a fantastic cafeteria for post-match analysis and chat and offers an essential safe space to members, especially at a time when people are struggling with mental health due in part, to the realities of retirement.
