Scotland’s first walking cricket festival held in Doune

A new cricket festival has put a fresh spin on the traditional game.

Doune and Dunblane Cricket Club hosted Scotland’s first-ever walking cricket festival on Tuesday, August 25, at The Grazings, in a landmark moment for the sport north of the border.

Three teams from across Forth Valley and beyond gathered for a day of friendly but competitive matches, played at a slower pace to make the game more accessible.

Dave Simpson, who established the Doune and Dunblane walking cricket group, said: “It was great to see so many cricketers of varying ages (from 17 to over 80) and ability enjoying the cricket, making new friends with a hint of sporting competition.”

The festival was organised in a round-robin format, with each team playing 12-over matches against one another.

Doune and Dunblane’s walking cricket team was formed just last year but already boasts more than 20 regular players who meet every Friday.

The club’s home ground, The Grazings, is steeped in history, located on the site of an ancient Roman fort near the River Teith and Doune Castle.

Other teams taking part included Strathmore Cricket Club—who joined forces with Stenhousemuir to form ‘Strathstenny’—and Westquarter and Redding Cricket Club, recognised for their inclusive approach to the sport.

Strathmore was the first club in Scotland to introduce walking cricket, while Westquarter and Redding have even explored virtual reality cricket for their members.

Despite a postponement due to poor weather, the rescheduled matches went ahead in good spirits, offering plenty of entertaining cricket and moments of camaraderie.

Each team named a star player, with Richard selected for Strathstenny, Alan for Westquarter and Redding, and Euan for Doune and Dunblane.

In keeping with the spirit of the day, the festival ended in a draw.

Lunch was provided by club volunteers Fiona and Sue.

Doune and Dunblane Cricket Club play at The Grazings in Doune every Friday at 11am during the summer, and indoors at The Dunblane Centre on Fridays at 12pm during the winter months.
