North Somerset Council is inviting everyone to get involved in this year’s North Somerset Walk Fest, as the popular month-long event returns in May to showcase the wide range of walking opportunities across the area.

Walking is simple, free and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. It’s one of the easiest ways to stay active, improve physical and mental wellbeing, and enjoy everything North Somerset has to offer – from natural landscapes to local shops and community spaces.

To encourage everyone to step outside and ‘Walk this May’, North Somerset Council has provided an online calendar of events, including organised group walks, walking sports, and themed walks up to six miles long. Explore the full programme at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/nswalkfest

Anyone needing support to view the online calendar can visit their local library for assistance. Many routes are accessible for wheelchair users as well as people with limited mobility.

Cllr Jenna Ho Marris, Cabinet Member for Homes and Health at North Somerset Council, said: “We want North Somerset’s communities to be caring, healthy and safe, and Health Walks are a perfect example of people helping each other to live well.

“Walking is not only good for your physical wellbeing but also for mental health, through improving mood, reducing stress and anxiety, increasing energy levels and promoting better sleep.

“We have many beautiful areas to explore and hope everyone will make the most of North Somerset Walk Fest this May – please do get in touch if you need additional support.”

There are established walking groups in many locations across North Somerset, which always welcome new members. Join a Health Walk group for short, sociable walks ranging from 30 to 90 minutes, led by friendly, trained volunteer leaders. These walks are perfect for anyone who is new to exercise or looking to become more active, find out more at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/nswalkfest.

Workplaces can get involved with North Somerset Walk Fest too, by setting up a walking challenge, walking to work where possible, or swapping a traditional meeting for a walking meeting. Bristol Walk Fest also has 148 guided walks to join throughout May, see www.bristolwalkfest.com.

The Better Health North Somerset team will be sharing tips, advice, and information throughout May on Facebook (@BetterHealthNS). Follow the page to discover more about walking opportunities in North Somerset, including routes and links to walking groups, and use #NSWalkThisMay to stay connected.
