Winchester Rugby Club Launches Inclusive Format Of Rugby

A new inclusive format of rugby is coming to a Winchester pitch.

Winchester Rugby Football Club is launching walking rugby, a low-impact, mixed-gender version of the sport designed for all ages and abilities.

The initiative is aimed at those who want to stay active, return to rugby after time away, recover from injury or simply try the sport for the first time.

Walking rugby is played at a slower pace with minimal contact and no scrums or rucks, focusing instead on passing, positioning and enjoyment.

It is open to everyone, regardless of experience.

The idea has been developed by club president Robbie Sanderson and long-standing member Chris Gilbert-Wood.

Steve Barrow, chairman of Winchester Rugby Club, said: “I would like to thank all those involved with this new initiative and what it will add to our great community rugby club.”

The club describes walking rugby as a sociable and inclusive format that brings people together, helps build friendships and keeps players active in a supportive environment.

The first session will take place at the club’s Nuns Road grounds on Saturday, October 11, from 10am to 11am.

No specialist equipment is required – just comfortable clothing, trainers and a willingness to get involved.

The club will provide guidance on the basics, making it easy for complete beginners to join in.

A spokesman for the club said: “It’s ideal for reliving those glory days or for giving the game a try if you have never played before.”
