Organizers can’t afford to pay venue without grants
An annual walking soccer tournament in Nanoose Bay is not happening this year.
The organizers, Vanisle Walking Soccer, were impacted by the Regional District of Nanaimo’s decision not to award grants to local recreation groups to pay for rentals of venue for their events.
Rob Jonas said they were hoping to hold a sixth annual tournament at Arbutus Meadows in Nanoose Bay. They are not able cover the rental fees with the RDN grants.
He was hoping to still stage it outdoors in August at the Parksville Community Park but said unfortunately, it is not going to happen.
“With rising costs and the time to travel, gas/ ferries etc, teams aren’t willing to travel for a one-day event here,” said Jonas, who introduced walking soccer in Parksville Qualicum Beach. “So, sadly, I had to cancel the event.”
