Staying fit and connected to sports groups keeps 82-year-old Reet Lenaghan feeling young.

As a member of Ballarat Netball Association, Lenaghan regularly coaches children’s netball and plays a key role in coordinating the club’s all-ages walking netball program.

The netty stalwart was at the Vickers Street Hub Community Hub in Sebastopol last week as part of the launch of the Ballarat Seniors Festival.

The month-long October program includes more-than 100 active and social events and activities – including a walking netball come-and-try session – to engage people over the age of 60.

The 2026 theme, Connect, Create, Celebrate, reflects a focus on bringing older residents together, supporting lifelong learning and highlighting the contributions of seniors.

Highlights of the program include the free Victorian Seniors Festival Country Concert at Civic Hall on 6 October, free wellbeing and fitness activities, guided tours, workshops and social mingling opportunities across the municipality.

City of Ballarat Sebastopol Ward councillor Des Hudson joined a wide range of community group representatives to launch the festival that promotes positive ageing.

Among those gathered were members of Ballarat South Seniors Club who are counting down to their rock n roll themed birthday bash on 7 October.

Ballarat East Community Men’s Shed members are looking forward to hosting plenty of barbecues, and sharing what they have to offer newcomers, as are a diverse range of organisations involved in the festival.

“The Ballarat Seniors Festival is one of the highlights of our community calendar, bringing people together through a diverse program of activities delivered by and for our community,” Cr Hudson said.

“Whether it’s connecting with old friends or new, trying a new activity or revisiting a favourite hobby, there is something for everyone to enjoy during the Ballarat Seniors Festival.”
