A walking tennis festival is being held to encourage people of all ages to try the slower-paced version of the sport.

Sidford Tennis Club will host the event on Tuesday, June 16, from 11am to 2pm, in partnership with Age UK Devon.

Walking tennis is growing in popularity, offering an accessible and sociable way to stay active, especially for those recovering from injury or returning to tennis after a break.

It allows the ball to bounce twice and emphasises fun, fitness, and friendship over competition.

Many participants say the sessions help build confidence and mobility in a supportive setting.

Andy Neil and Clive Brooke, both members of the club, have since progressed to playing on full-size courts.

Andy said: “My time spent playing walking tennis has been transformational in terms of my health, fitness, and well-being.”

Cilve said: “I have made so many new friends here that Tuesday sessions have become a highlight of the week.”

The upcoming festival follows the success of last year’s event, which celebrated the achievements of existing participants and welcomed many newcomers to the club.

Organisers say membership has soared over the past year, as have the enjoyment and skill levels of all concerned.

A spokesman for Sidford Tennis Club said: “Everyone is welcome – so don’t be shy, come along and give it a try.”

The walking tennis format is designed to be inclusive, with a relaxed, sociable atmosphere full of encouragement, whether players are picking up a racquet for the first time or returning after many years.

The event costs £10 per person, including refreshments, and booking is essential. Payments can be made by cash or Bacs.
